Pause

{rushing here and there and everywhere}

Despite the fact that my legs are slightly longer than his, this little fella and I have a lot in common. Rushing here and running there, trying to get this and that done, life is crazy right now. Honestly, I’m okay with it, but I just wish I looked as cute as he did while doing it all.

You might notice a few little upgrades around the site today (if you don’t, press ctrl+r or command+r). As I learn more and more html/css (yep, I do it all myself because I’m too stubborn to pay someone else–typical), I find more and more things I want to change and fiddle with. Some might fault that as perfectionism (you know, that ‘weakness’ we were told to reluctantly divulge in a job interview), but either way I see it as yet another learning opportunity. Fun! But the most exciting for me is my newly renovated About page, which has a bit more direction than it did when I first wrote it. Back then, I had no idea what I was actually going to blog about, so I just sort of wrote some stuff.

Last thing: I can’t tell you how excited and honoured I was that Victoria of vmac+cheese sent a little love my way (here)  for the LinkedIn post I wrote last week (and if you haven’t already read it, you should!). It’s fun to have readers share comments and stories on your blog, but when someone else finds you interesting enough to share with their own audience, it’s really something else I tell ya. Anyway, I realized that I actually do really love link posts (because it often helps me find more amazing bloggers out there), so I’m going to try to do that a little more over here myself.

So in short, here’s to January’s successes, and February’s challenges. What have you done so far in 2012 that’s made you proud? And what’s next? February for me is full of friends and family coming to visit, which may actually include me jumping out of a helicopter to ride down a glacier–but you know, we’ll see.

Chalk It Up to Being Thrifty

Chalk paint has been floating around internet-DIY-land for a while now, but I’ve really only seen it on mugs and other kid-friendly projects in the past. Recently though, it seems that the do-it-yourselfers are bringing chalk paint into the realm of the highly practical and seriously functional. As an organization nut myself, I love the simplicity of its matte black look, and would definitely be okay with incorporating that into my décor.

Although traditionally I correlate chalk with hopscotch and math lessons, it seems the favourite application of late is in the kitchen. Funnily enough, as my own interests in the kitchen develop past the basics of actually cooking a meal, I’m also becoming more and more aware of its presentation. Every time I visit my parents back home, I covet my mother’s beautiful serving dishes and party-hosting wares. But since I still can’t really afford nice crystal dishes myself, I’ll settle with simple elegance the DIY way. Except, it’s not really “settling” after all, because how amazing are these pretty projects?

The first time I saw chalk paint used on kitchen wares, it was on the base of a wine glass to provide an easy and reusable way to identify it as yours. I love this idea, because I’ve always kind of disliked wine glass charms, and could never remember which one was mine anyway. The second time I saw the DIY chalk paint, I was in love with it–a cheese plate!? Amazing. Who actually knows which type of cheese is which when it’s served? Well, now everyone will.

I’ve fully convinced myself that the applications of this stuff are endless. I’m thinking about using it to label my herb pots when summer rolls around, and can even see it being used for spice bottles and storage containers. Obviously I don’t want all-black decor, but as far as simplicity goes, it fully suits my constant need for further organization. And as far as longevity, it won’t clash with any décor I may decide to invest in down the road, which is a definite bonus. Have any of you guys tried this stuff? What do you think, is it useful at home, or should it stay in the classroom?

I’m not really certain of the health aspects of putting your food directly on dried chalk paint, and that’s definitely worth looking into. However one thing is definitely on my mind, and that’s what I’m going to do about my ugly handwriting once I DIY myself to party-hosting bliss. I wonder… can people can be outsourced for that? Ha.

The Little Things

{oreo cookies + cream cupcakes}

{pretty candle in a bejewelled box}

This week, the little things that are making me happy are brought to you by my new-found photography time. I’m definitely still learning the ins and outs of this hobby, which is especially difficult when I live in a basement apartment… and am only ever home after sundown. Oh, the joys of unnatural lighting! At least I have high ceilings.

Photography is definitely tricky when you’ve only got bulb-light to work with, but it’s helped out by the fact that I’ve got some pretty cute (and yummy) things to brighten up my life these days. Homemade cupcakes always make me happy, especially vegan ones from my new cookbook. Candle light is another way I like to offset the harshness of overhead lighting, and I especially love the little jewel on the lid of this candle. It just adds a bit more pizazz to an already pretty decoration.

{edible glitter!}

I picked up these edible glitter stars the other day because my best friend’s little sister challenged me to a cupcake bake-off. Never one to take a challenge lightly, I decided I needed to step up my cupcake decorating game. This also means I’ll probably have to actually wait for my cupcakes to cool, so as not to have the icing melt off the top (such a tragedy).

I’ve also fallen in love recently with tie-top blouses, and have expanded my collection drastically for work. Isn’t the pattern on this one so pretty? With that and my new love ring (which I got here), I just feel so glamorous. Which is sooo the opposite of corporate engineering, but hey, I’m breaking the mold here. Someone’s gotta do it.
